Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

The Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department at this campus was established in 2002. The first batch of EEE students under Amrita College of Engineering and Technology was admitted in AY 2018–2019. The department provides a value-based quality learning experience, inculcated through quality instruction, academic exchange and training that prepares students for professional challenges ahead. The department boasts of highly qualified faculty members with rich and varied experience both in industry and the academia. The department is deeply committed to achieving goals based on the vision and mission of Mata Amritanandmayi Math. Towards this end, the following measures are adopted to improve quality and impart a humane touch to the learning process:

      Electrical and Electronics Engineering is a trans-disciplinary area and one of the broadest engineering disciplines. EEE students at ACET get abundantly familiarized with the generation, transmission, protection and use of electrical energy. Among aspects that the students learn and practice are design, analysis, prototyping, manufacturing, and maintenance of electrical generators, electric motors, transformers, transmission and distribution equipment, wiring and lighting, and electrical appliances. EEE courses focus heavily on analogue and digital electronics, power electronics, microelectronics, computer networking, consumer electronics and embedded systems. Special emphasis is laid on renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic and wind, in tune with emerging technological needs and challenges.

     The curriculum for the four-year full-time (regular) B.E. (EEE) course has been developed by the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Board of Studies, Anna University, Chennai. Currently, Anna University Regulation 2017 (Choice Based Credit System) is followed. Regulation 2017 syllabus has been followed since 2017–2018.

Academics - Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) is one of the broadest engineering disciplines. EEE students study and practice about the generation, transmission, distribution, protection and use of electrical energy. During studies, EEE students learn and practice about design, analysis, prototyping, manufacturing and maintenance of electrical generators, electric motors, transformers, transmission and distribution equipment, wiring and lighting and electrical appliances. In addition, EEE course focus more on Analog Electronics, Digital Electronics, Power Electronics, Microelectronics, Computer Networking, Consumer Electronics and Embedded Systems. Also, the curriculum focus on renewable energy sources such as solar photovoltaic, wind and other non-renewable energy sources for power generation. The field is of great importance and has resulted in rapid industrial growth.

     Amrita College of Engineering and Technology offers a four-year full time (regular) B. E. (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) programme.  The B. E., in Electrical and Electronics Engineering curriculum developed by the Electrical & Electronics Engineering Board of Studies, Anna University, Chennai.  Currently Anna University Regulation 2017 (CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM) is followed and Regulation 2017 syllabus is taught to the students admitted to BE (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) programme from the academic year 2017-2018 onwards.

Resources - Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

The department has spacious classrooms, air-conditioned seminar hall, workshop facilities and well-maintained laboratories as per AICTE and Anna University norms.  It has a compatible fully air-conditioned computer lab with 30 systems, all in a networked environment with un interrupted power supply. These systems are typically equipped with recent software.

      The department also houses a library that makes available a rich collection of standard books and non book resources (DVDs) for the faculty and students to refer and get updated with robust applications. The laboratories which serve the functionality of this programme  are enumerated  as follows:

1.Engineering Practices Lab

Electrical workshop is intended for developing practical workshop skills in the students and it is offered to 1st year EEE students as GE6162- Engineering Practices laboratory. This laboratory is used to impart practical knowledge to the students about the different wiring schemes, familiarization of Megger, MCB and ELCB. They also gain knowledge about residential wiring, troubleshooting various electrical equipments like ceiling fan, mixer, air conditioner and other electrical gadgets. This workshop is well established with the required basic tools, trainer kits and accessories. The workshop is very imperative not only for the students of Electrical Engineering branch but also for the students of other engineering branches.

2. Electric Circuits Lab

 EE6211- Electric Circuit laboratories are offered for 2nd year Electrical Engineering students   as a part of the curriculum. Each lab experiment has a design part, simulation and an actual experimental verification in the laboratory (bread-boarding/soldering). The basic objective is to give hands-on 

experience in the design and implementation of analog and mixed-signal circuits. The purpose of lab experiment is to continue to build circuit construction skills using different circuit element. It also aims to introduce MATLAB a circuit simulation software tool. It enables the students to gain sufficient knowledge on the programming and simulation of Electrical circuits.

3.Electrical Machines lab

The Electrical Machines lab, EE6411 Electrical Machines Laboratory-I and EE6512 Electrical Machines Laboratory-II are offered to 2nd year and 3rd year EEE students. This lab is equipped with more than 30 machine sets and can accommodate multiple batches of students at the same time. The lab houses a collection of AC & DC machines manufactured by Kirloskar, Crompton, GVD etc., The objective of the Electrical Machine Laboratory is to make students understand basics, testing, speed control, performance characteristics, and behavior of the DC and AC Machines, transformers, synchronous and asynchronous machines and give them experimental skill, familiarize with the constructional details of different types, working principle and their performance. This lab consists of machines such as DC machine, induction motor, induction generator, alternators, synchronous motors etc., all mounted in industrial type of assembly to give the students industrial feel. The service of this lab facility is also extended to the Departments of Electronics and Communication and Mechanical Engineering.

4.Power Electronics lab

EE6611-Power Electronics and Drives laboratory is provided to 3rd year students to get an overview of various forms of power semiconductor devices and its applications in rectifier, inverter and choppers. It also acquaints with the application of electronic devices for conversion, control & conditioning of electric power. Further it aids the students to acquire an overview of different types of power semi-conductor devices and to cognize the operation, characteristics and performance parameters of controlled rectifiers, to analyze the operation, switching techniques, modulation techniques of PWM inverters and to grasp the harmonic reduction techniques.

5.Control and Instrumentation lab

  EE6511- Control and Instrumentation laboratory is offered to 3rd year EEE students with a view to provide sound information on analysis and design of control system along with the basics of instrumentation. The lab is aesthetically designed with state of art equipment to conduct various experiments like AC & DC servomotors, synchro transmitter and receiver, stepper motor, LVDT, strain gauge, optical sensor etc. and latest software like MATLAB & PSPICE. This lab also helps to train the students in the measurement of displacement, resistance, inductance, torque, angle etc., and to give exposure to AC, DC bridges and transient measurement. The design and implementation of control theory is done using MATLAB software to work out the experiments for obtaining the transfer function models, to perform time response and frequency response analysis and to grasp the idea of stability of system.

6.Power System Simulation lab

The objective of the Power System Simulation Laboratory, offered to the final year Electrical Engineering students as EE6711- Power system simulation laboratory, is to implement the concept of power systems modelling by mathematical modelling of various power systems equipment and to select the projects on power systems analysis & AI applications to power systems. The Lab is equipped with 30 Computers for conducting the simulation studies in multifaceted domains Like Control System, Power Electronics, Signals and Systems and Power System using various software's like Mat lab, PSIM, Auto Cad, MPLAB. This Lab facility is also used for Computer programming in C, C++. Simulation Lab facility is used for organizing workshop Lab sessions, short term courses like IoT, Robotics etc.

7.Renewable Energy Systems lab

EE8712- Renewable Energy Systems laboratory is offered to 4th year EEE students. RENEWABLE Energy lab focuses on designing, testing, and disseminating renewable and efficient energy system. The mission of Renewable Energy Systems laboratory is to help these technologies to realize their full potential to contribute to environmentally sustainable development in industries. This lab helps students by providing adequate inputs on a variety of issues in harnessing Renewable Energy.

  • The session on MATLAB/Simulink was conducted for the first year ECE and EEE students by Mr. Sreenivasan, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and Mr. Binod Chandran Kaimal, Assistant Professor Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita College of Engineering and Technology.
  • The hands on training on basics of PCB design and fabrication has been conducted for the first year ECE and EEE students as a part of bridge course by Mr.Rajendran Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and  Mr.Sreekumar A.V., Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita College of Engineering and Technology
  • A Hands-on workshop on AUTOCAD Electrical was conducted from 24th July to 26th July 2019 at Amrita College of Engineering. 69 students from third-year polytechnic – Electrical and Electronics attended the workshop. The workshop was intended to teach the students on how to create electrical drawings in AUTOCAD Electrical and make them familiarized about various tools and functions that can be applied in Industries. The sessions were  handled by Sreekumar A. V. and Binod Chandran Kaimal (Assistant Professors – Dept of EEE) from Amrita College of Engineering and Technology
  • A batch of 24 students attended Internship programme at Terraform Global Pvt. Ltd, 7.72 MW Solar Power Plant, Munanjipatti, Tirunelveli District. The duration of the programme was 1 week from 11th June 2019 to 17th June 2019.The students experienced a detailed study working of solar power plant and they also had a practical training in understanding the functionalities during scheduled annual maintenance of power plant
  • A Hands-on workshop on Electrical wiring was organised by Dr. Sivagama Sundari, HOD, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, ACET on 3rd August 2019 at B.Ed College Auditorium.  30 students from second-year – Electrical and Electronics, Amrita College of Engineering and Technology attended the workshop.
  • One day workshop on solar photovoltaic design was organised by Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering  for 2nd year EEE students, Amrita Polytechnic on 17th August 2019
